The Tao of Friday

I do think I’ve mellowed as I’ve aged.  When I was younger, I was always answering back, always trying to get the last word.  Then I stopped, and I let others be the sharp one, the abrasive one.  I let people just talk without comment, even if what they are saying is ridiculous.  I do give up more, and I find that I am happier.  I hate having to fight for everything, and would love for things to just start coming to me. But I think this is the first step. Chapter LVI agrees.

Those who know don’t talk.
Those who talk don’t know.

Close your mouth,
block off your senses,
blunt your sharpness,
untie your knots,
soften your glare,
settle your dust.
This is the primal identity.

Be like the Tao.
It can’t be approached or withdrawn from,
benefited or harmed,
honored or brought into disgrace.
It gives itself up continually.
That is why it endures.
